Gary's story

Gary Schroeder Jr., Badge #307, faithfully served the Zumbrota community for 18 years before medically retiring from the police department at the end of 2020. In addition to serving with the Police Department, Gary served as a member of the Zumbrota Fire Department for many years as well as previously serving the Grand Meadow and Alden Police Departments. Gary fought a hard and courageous battle against Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) attained in the line of duty. Gary died of suicide on April 17th, 2023. He will be fondly remembered for his hearty laugh and his deep love for his community.

Gary was actively involved with many programs designed to help various communities and people in need including; COPS (Concerns Of Police Survivors) through the Zumbrota half-marathon, the Special Olympics Torch Run, the Invisible Wounds Project, Honor Flight, Protectors Peak and Fight for Air Climb, as well as many others. Following his retirement, Gary pushed for the department to partner with a mental health provider to help fellow officers who are battling PTSD or any other struggles due to the nature of their career. Thanks to his advocacy, the city now provides access to services tailored to public safety at no cost to officers.

On April 17th, 2024, Mayor Todd Hammel issued a proclamation declaring every April 17th to be in honor and remembrance of Officer Gary Schroeder Jr.
