Zoning Ordinances
Zoning ordinances are local laws that regulate how land can be used in a city. They are intended to ensure the orderly development of a city and the sound management of its land. Zoning ordinances can include regulations for:
- Building use: What types of uses are permitted in each zoning district
- Development standards: The height, size, and use of buildings, as well as lot sizes
- Architectural style: The style of architecture that is permitted
- Lighting, signage, and landscaping: Regulations for these aspects of property use
- Natural features: Regulations for shoreland, floodplains, and wetlands
Zoning ordinances are periodically reviewed and revised to implement the city's Comprehensive Plan or in response to requests for changes. The process for reviewing and acting on changes involves a public hearing and input from the Planning Commission and City Council.
